Contributing to this ambitious goal requires aligning urban planning instruments with urban climate mitigation and decarbonizing existing gas infrastructure in the Franckviertel neighborhood. In the project, standards for net zero non-profit housing will be tested in practice and shared learning are promoted.
Climate neutrality roadmap Klosterneuburg
Klosterneuburg is located between the Vienna Woods and the Danube floodplains, a city with a high proportion of green and recreational space while being close to Vienna. This location makes Klosterneuburg an interesting case study for researching climate neutrality – particularly in the areas of CO₂-emissions-free commuter transport, climate-friendly services, and CO₂ sequestration through forestry.
CO2 free Deutschlandsberg 2040
The city of Deutschlandsberg has set itself the goal of becoming climate-neutral by 2040 and is developing a climate neutrality roadmap to ensure climate-resilient urban development. This plan is also intended to combine the expected population growth, due to the commissioning of the Koralm railway at the end of 2025, while maintaining a high quality of life.
ClimateCare - Green rating for climate-vulnerable groups in urban areas
The project utilizes climate and satellite data to analyse the relationship between urban green spaces and the well-being of heat-vulnerable populations in ten Austrian pioneer cities. The project delivers data-backed recommendations and investment rankings for greening measures, such as rooftop and façade gardens, to maximize health benefits and cost-effectiveness.
NEB Resources - Potentials in the Existing Urban Fabric for a Socially Inclusive, Circular and Climate-Just Matzleinsdorf
NEB Resources collaborates with residents to develop a feasible and politically supported transformation concept for a socially inclusive, circular, and climate-friendly Matzleinsdorf neighborhood in Vienna's Margareten district. Co-research, temporary interventions, and prototypes activate material and immaterial resources, thereby transforming physical spaces and social relationships.
KLAIR - Dynamic Microclimate Intelligence for Sustainable Urban Development
KLAIR develops an AI-powered, dynamic urban climate map that simulates microclimatic stress as well as future scenarios such as greening or densification. By integrating climate, structural and health data, the tool enables evidence-based evaluation of adaptation measures and their health impacts. In this way, KLAIR supports cities of all sizes in climate-resilient, socially equitable and cost-efficient planning.
Baden climate neutral - Climate neutrality roadmap Baden near Vienna
The city aims to become climate-neutral by 2040.
SeiersbergPirka2040 - #wirsindzukunft: Roadmap for a climate-neutral future in Seiersberg-Pirka
Seiersberg-Pirka is the second largest municipality in the district of Graz-Umgebung and was created in the course of the Styrian municipal reform in 2015 by merging the previously independent municipalities of Seiersberg and Pirka. Klimapionierstadt Wien
Systemic learning, accelerated knowledge transfer and new capacities as well as innovative impulses and the more ambitious design of ongoing activities will help to align the processes of the Vienna City Administration in a way that best supports the achievement of climate neutrality and resilience by 2040. The Klimapionierstadt Wien Partnership also contributes to putting selected pilot neighbourhoods on the path to climate neutrality by 2030.
NUCLEUS - Sustainable Urban Clusters for Climate-Neutral, Efficient, and Eco-Friendly Urban Development
The exploratory project NUCLEUS examines how Positive Energy Districts (PEDs) can serve as catalysts for positive urban developments. The climate pioneer district Tagger Areal in Graz serves as a case study. The project aims to identify technical and regulatory challenges and develop future-proof energy concepts to enable the exchange of electricity, heat, and cooling with surrounding industrial enterprises.
Mission2030 – Climate-neutral Smart City Klagenfurt 2030
As Austria's only city, Klagenfurt is part of the EU Cities Mission 2030. Along with Rome, Barcelona, Laibach and other European cities, the Carinthian state capital has set itself the goal of being climate neutral by 2030. A project that is not utopia, but quite realistic! An essential component and backbone of this mission is the Austrian Pioneer Cities Program.
Kapfenberg_2_zeroCO2 - Creation of the 2040 climate neutrality plan for the industrial city of Kapfenberg
