These cities are designated as spaces for experimentation and innovation, showcasing suitable strategies and measures to serve as role models for other European cities. The mission contributes significantly to the European "Green Deal", through which the EU aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2050.

The European Commission has selected 100 cities to participate in the "Cities Mission". These cities represent all 27 member states, with Klagenfurt from Austria participating as a climate showcase city.
The mission adopts a cross-sectoral and needs-based approach, creating synergies between existing initiatives and aligning activities with the actual needs of the cities.

An important focus is on involving citizens, businesses, investors, as well as local, regional, and national authorities. The aim is for these entities to collaborate, creating pioneering climate-neutral examples by 2030 that other cities can emulate.
