Climate Plan Spittal - Development of a climate neutrality roadmap for the city of Spittal an der Drau

The City of Spittal/Drau is already addressing the challenges of the future in many areas and through numerous initiatives (e.g. as part of a KEM and KLAR region, as an e5 municipality, with the adoption of a climate and energy mission statement in 2024, etc.). The city aims to maintain the quality of life both locally and regionally, and to continue ensuring high-quality urban living, working, and economic spaces. It recognizes that achieving this requires short-, medium- and long-term strategies across all climate-relevant sectors.

Short Description

Spittal an der Drau Logo

To fully capture the concept of climate neutrality and implement it in a targeted way, the city intends—within the framework of this project—to consolidate, supplement, and structure existing foundations. It also aims to initiate implementation measures both within its own sphere of influence and beyond it.

From today's perspective, planned (innovative) measures include actions in the areas of mobility (pavement master plan), buildings (sustainable building standards with a focus on climate neutrality), and urban development (climate-neutral neighbourhoods, unsealing, and tree planting).

As a climate-conscious pioneering city, we are clearly committed to our responsibility: by 2040, we want to cover most of our energy requirements from our own renewable sources. In doing so, we are sending a strong political signal for regional independence, security of supply and a sustainable future. The expansion of photovoltaics and hydropower is not just lip service, but a central component of our strategic climate policy. Sustainability is not an option for us, but an obligation - ecologically, economically and socially. We are actively shaping change and demonstrating that local politics can take bold steps and create concrete solutions for future generations.

Deputy Mayor Angelika Hinteregger, Bakk.

In addition, a list of local and regional stakeholders will be compiled who are willing to contribute capital, knowledge, resources, and/or capacities in the short, medium, and long term to support the implementation of measures beyond the city's direct scope of action.

Based on this, a climate neutrality roadmap will be developed—defining a vision, goals, strategies, and measures, along with a capacity, structure, and implementation plan across thematic and structural sectors, including climate change adaptation and soil protection.
