Köflach climate-neutral - a town with fossil history and climate neutral future

In recent decades, the city of Köflach has focused on structural change, moving away from the lignite mining that used to characterise the town and towards a sustainable future. Building on this, Köflach offers good conditions as an attractive residential location. The sustainable transformation of the town can be driven forward with consistent measures towards climate change-adapted living and climate-neutral energy supply, while at the same time strengthening the nationally recognised tourist destinations.

Short Description

(Copyright: Municipality of Köflach)

Köflach wants to be climate-neutral by 2040. In order to show how this goal can be achieved, a roadmap is needed that provides orientation (for administration, politics and the population), defines goals for individual areas of action and creates a common understanding of the central levers for achieving them.

It should also show which (administrative) structures, cooperation and (financial) resources are required for implementation.

At the end of the project period, the city will have a climate neutrality roadmap. This will contain specific targets and measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and achieve climate neutrality.

The thermal spa and Lippizzaner town of Köflach lies in the heart of Western Styria. Its past was characterised by mining. In the future, the focus will be on tourism. In order to maintain a stable environment, it is important to actively tackle the challenges of climate change. Renewable energies, sustainable mobility and climate adaptation measures are key factors for the future of our municipality, but also for the next generation. The climate neutrality roadmap should be a tool for us to develop realistic and effective strategies and implement them by 2040.

Specific implementation measures will be developed in a participatory process involving relevant stakeholders from politics, administration and private sector organisations.

In addition to measures in the city's direct sphere of influence, the roadmap will also include activities that promote the development of the municipality of Köflach into a tourism region adapted to climate change and a sustainable business location.
