Counterintuitive Building Types - Innovation Potentials for Sustainable Transformation of Commercial and Retail Locations

Selected commercial retail and properties provide existing resources for this project’s case studies that will convert and further develop them towards more positive energy, use, and life cycle balances. The currently underperforming properties will be transformed into more active and attractive places of higher experiential density and environmental relevance through multiplication of space and uses in the interior and exterior areas, demonstrating opportunities for more sustainable development of these understudied building typologies.

DALEC - Day- and Artificial Light with Energy Calculation

In the course of DALEC an online concept evaluation tool for architects, building engineers, lighting designers and building owners was developed. Although easy to use, the software accounts for the complex thermal and light processes in buildings and allows a simple evaluation of heating, cooling and electric lighting loads. Not only energy, but also user behavior were considered (e.g. in terms of glare protection) and visual and thermal comfort were evaluated. This novel and innovative, holistic approach makes sustainable and energy efficient building design possible for new buildings as well as refurbishment.

DIM4Energy - Digital Information Models for the Planning and Optimization of Buildings and Urban Energy Infrastructure

Digital information models (DIM) are playing an increasingly important role in urban planning and decision-making processes, from individual buildings (BIM) to urban information models (UIM). For the planning and optimal operation of plus-energy neighborhoods, valuable information could be obtained from these existing models, provided the appropriate data sources and associated software tools are properly linked.

DeLight Monitoring - Demo light Impact-Monitoring and metrological investigation of energy-efficient buildings

The Project consists of the metrological examination of eleven innovative buildings in terms of energy consumption and user comfort. In addition, building constructors and operators as well as the public are sensitized to the subject of energy-related optimization of building operation. Also, the potentials of energy-related optimization of building operation are shown.

Designing Synergies. Spatial and Energetic Transformation Scenarios for Small Towns and Municipalities Using the Example of the Wagram Region (Lower Austria).

An interdisciplinary exploratory project that synergistically analyses strategies for the activation of vacant buildings and the potential for the formation of small-scale energy communities. The starting point is student projects from the Institute of Architecture and Design, TU Wien, for four municipalities in the Wagram region. On this basis, an interdisciplinary team of experts is developing a concept for a synergy cluster focussing on spatial energy planning, building physics, the circular economy and social innovation.

Development of a Plus-Energy District Certification Including a Quick Check for klimaaktiv Certification of Settlements

The transfer of the "Zukunftsquartieransatz" for the development of climate-neutral positive-energy districts into practical application. Through developed process flows, a newly available klimaaktiv PED assessment tool including documentation materials and targeted communication, planners and developers are supported in making early decisions. This enables climate-neutral positive-energy districts to establish themselves as a key tool for achieving climate-neutral cities.
