DREI x NULL = NULL - Research project on climate-neutral construction in all life cycle phases based on three demonstration buildings
Short Description
Starting point / motivation
The F&E project DREI x NULL = NULL aims, by three demonstration buildings, to develop a range of methods, procedures and construction designs with which buildings can be planned and constructed to ensure climate neutrality across their life cycle; construction (A), maintenance (B) and dismantling (C).
Following the construction of the three demonstration buildings, different from each other in location, orientation and size, it will be examined how climate protection measures can be realistically planned and implemented at different requirements and conditions in regards to amongst others emission reduction, resource consumption, circular thinking, local sourcing and current economic and building regulations.
Contents and goals
DREI x NULL = NULL will take an essential step towards sustainable building across the entire life cycle. The aim is, with three property developers, to construct three different types of residential buildings (a three-story, a four-story and a six-story apartment building), each with net zero emissions CO2 equivalent for the life cycle phases A, B and C. This approach differs from current and established certification systems and leads to a greater reduction in emissions.
Methods
The holistic planning approach across all phases is supported at DREI X NULL = NULL by implementing feedback-loops with property developers, construction companies and experts.
In addition to the constructive feasibility, the technical feasibility and economic efficiency will also be assessed in a parallel process. Thereby, multiple concepts as well as practical methods for future-oriented building can be developed.
In addition, aiming for climate neutrality in the dismantling leads to circular thinking in regards to building components and materials. The F&E-project is therefore pursuing the innovative approach of thinking about the construction from end to end and using recycled materials already in the construction of the demonstration buildings.
Expected results
Through the cooperation of different property developers, planners, and experts in the consortium, DREI x NULL = NULL combines three different projects. This will ensure that learning processes and findings from the demonstration buildings can be spread and used across the team, and also used to the advantage of the individual projects.
The aim is to prove that climate neutral building across all life cycle phases is possible in Austria. Also taking into account the current framework (e.g., economy) conditions in Austria.
At the same time, the demonstration buildings serve as showcase projects for residential buildings, which account for the majority of new buildings.
The members of the broadly composed consortium can use the acquired knowledge directly in their future projects and thereby pass it on to stakeholders across the planning and construction industry. Consequently, the findings and results will be disseminated far beyond the consortium.
