The project delivers a practical decision basis to pave the way for a demonstration project supporting climate-resilient urban development.
Designing Synergies. Spatial and Energetic Transformation Scenarios for Small Towns and Municipalities Using the Example of the Wagram Region (Lower Austria).
An interdisciplinary exploratory project that synergistically analyses strategies for the activation of vacant buildings and the potential for the formation of small-scale energy communities. The starting point is student projects from the Institute of Architecture and Design, TU Wien, for four municipalities in the Wagram region. On this basis, an interdisciplinary team of experts is developing a concept for a synergy cluster focussing on spatial energy planning, building physics, the circular economy and social innovation.
Drain2Energy - Demonstration of a wastewater heat exchanger suitable for renovation in two existing buildings
Drain2Energy demonstrates an innovative in-house wastewater heat exchanger that can also utilize black water from toilets and is particularly suitable for retrofitting existing buildings. The technology is being tested in two demonstration buildings and monitored in real operation. The results provide key insights into the potential of wastewater heat as a renewable heat source and promote the use of this technology in existing and new buildings.

FW-Netz Traiskirchen - Feasibility study on decarbonizing the district heating network in Traiskirchen by using the sewage treatment plant as a heat source
The exploratory project is examining the technical, economic, and ecological feasibility of community-wide decarbonization of the district heating network in Traiskirchen. The focus is on merging the existing sub-networks and utilizing wastewater heat from the sewage treatment plant using a large heat pump. The results will form a basis for strategic decision-making and serve as a model for other small and medium-sized towns.
Fit4Heat_Rust - Future-proof heating network in Rust
Development of an innovative, sector-coupled heating network concept for the city of Rust that flexibly integrates renewable heat sources and cooling provision and enables third-party access in accordance with RED II.
FlexHP - AI-supported control models for optimising the flexibility of heat pumps to reduce the load on the electricity grid
Development of a new type of energy management system for heat pumps that enables methods for intelligent heat pump operation and thus maximises flexibility. This requires forecast-based models for control that utilise technologies such as machine learning.
GRAUfürGRÜN-BLAU - Cross-sectoral use of treated greywater for vital urban green spaces and stable groundwater resources
Exploratory project to analyze the potential of using purified grey water from private collection systems for use in public space (irrigation of green infrastructure and infiltration).
GeoDatKlim - Geo Data and Satellite Data for Carbon Neutral Cities
The Vienna Geospace Hub innovation lab will help optimize the application of geospatial and satellite data to solve complex urban challenges. The innovation lab serves as a networking platform for administration, science, economy, as well as a development and test environment for innovative use cases.
Heat islands Feldbach - Synergetic measures against overheating and heavy rain in preparation for an R&D&I project in Feldbach
Analysis and evaluation of the effects and cost-benefit ratios of synergetic measures with regard to overheating and heavy rain in cities. Based on this, an implementation plan will be developed for a subsequent demonstration in Feldbach, which can be used in many similar cities.
IK-EnErGie-Knoten - Intermunicipal Electricity and District Heating Network St. Ruprecht–Weiz–Gleisdorf
The IK-EnErGie-Knoten project is developing a sector-coupled, bidirectional energy system for the climate-neutral city of the future. The intelligent networking of existing electricity and heating infrastructures and new cooperation models that transcend property boundaries are creating a scalable energy hub that serves as a model for Austria.
InSite - Monitoring and evaluation of innovative demonstration buildings
In the "Stadt der Zukunft" and "Smart City Initiative" programmes, a large number of demonstration projects have been implemented in recent years. To be able to evaluate the developed innovations in a uniform and comparable form and to make the knowledge gained accessible to implementers, InSite subjects 10 selected objects from these programmes to energy and ecological monitoring as well as sociological surveys over a period of 24 months. The interpreted results are publicly available as a published study and as an interactive online platform.
Innovation lab act4energy
The Innovation Lab act4energy is set up as an innovation laboratory project. Its focus is to solve the problems of renewable energies integration with a focus on photovoltaic power paired with local consumption, linked to the the high fluctuation of renewable energies.
KLARA Amstetten: Klimaneutralitätsfahrplan Amstetten – Roadmap to Action
For the first time, goals for a climate-neutral Amstetten are defined and the necessary climate protection and climate change adaptation measures are developed and fields of action are prioritised.
KPQ goes NEB – Transformation of a Climate Pioneer Existing Neighborhood Using NEB Quality Criteria (Based on KPQ Graz)
With the "Climate Pioneer City Graz" (KPS Graz) project, the City of Graz is pursuing the strategic implementation of its climate protection plan by developing climate-neutral neighbourhoods, among other things. Based on the ongoing exploratory project "KPQ Graz", "KPQ goes NEB" focuses on the climate-neutral transformation of the Roseggersiedlung - a residential neighbourhood owned by Wohnen Graz dating back to the 1940s with 395 residential units. The aim is to transfer tried-and-tested development processes from new-build and conversion projects to the more complex environment of an existing neighbourhood.
