Designing Synergies. Spatial and Energetic Transformation Scenarios for Small Towns and Municipalities Using the Example of the Wagram Region (Lower Austria).
An interdisciplinary exploratory project that synergistically analyses strategies for the activation of vacant buildings and the potential for the formation of small-scale energy communities. The starting point is student projects from the Institute of Architecture and Design, TU Wien, for four municipalities in the Wagram region. On this basis, an interdisciplinary team of experts is developing a concept for a synergy cluster focussing on spatial energy planning, building physics, the circular economy and social innovation.
Digi-HBV - Topology-optimised reinforced concrete slabs with digital formwork and reinforcement
Digi-HBV delivers a reusable, material-efficient floor system that combines ecological impact with industrial feasibility. Core innovations include interlocking, CNC-milled timber dowels for the timber–concrete interface, demountable joints to ensure in-plane (diaphragm) action, and a generative, LCA-coupled file-to-factory workflow. Full-scale load tests verify load-bearing capacity, durability, and demountability. The outcome: at least 50% lower manufacturing emissions, significantly shorter construction times, and a scalable product for climate-neutral, circular construction.
DigiHemp/ Digital technologies for quality assurance and performance enhancement of hemp-based building materials
Development of digital methods for describing, predicting and optimizing the thermal/mechanical properties of composite materials made from bio-based raw materials. Taking into account the complex material morphology as well as the properties of the components for the prediction of building material properties, the overall goal of increasing the use of bio-based building materials shall be achieved.
Diverse DH Pöchlarn - Diversification strategies for a sector-coupled district heating supply in the municipality of Pöchlarn
The project aims to explore the feasibility of maximizing industrial waste heat extraction into the district heating system of the municipality of Pöchlarn so that the defossilization path can be taken further.
Drain2Energy - Demonstration of a wastewater heat exchanger suitable for renovation in two existing buildings
Drain2Energy demonstrates an innovative in-house wastewater heat exchanger that can also utilize black water from toilets and is particularly suitable for retrofitting existing buildings. The technology is being tested in two demonstration buildings and monitored in real operation. The results provide key insights into the potential of wastewater heat as a renewable heat source and promote the use of this technology in existing and new buildings.
E3 - Energy, Equity, Equality
Identification of barriers faced by specific groups in utilizing key energy transition technologies in communal and urban settings, including smart home, electric mobility, and energy communities. The results serve as a foundation for the development of inclusive and socially just technologies.
ECEE Climate Positivity
The ECEE Climate Positivity project aims to develop a climate-positive, scalable energy concept for commercial buildings. Through the innovative combination of building-integrated photovoltaics, component activation, and intelligent energy management, the project seeks to reduce CO₂ emissions, lower operating costs, and establish new business models for sustainable construction.
ECO-Transformation - Energy transformation through community building, sufficiency and serial solutions using the example of the "Cottage District"
Combining technical and environmental-psychological expertise to develop a transformation process towards a climate-neutral neighbourhood based on the methods of community building, sufficiency potential and serial implementation solutions using the example of the Cottage Quarter. Preparation of the serial implementation of the developed solutions and the transformation process.
ELEMENTS - Development of a procedure for the evaluation of elements of the post-war building stock (1960 - 1979) in Graz, Austria
Investigation of the building stock constructed in Graz between 1960 and 1980 with the aim of creating the basis for developing a potential analysis procedure regarding its preservation and refurbishment. Stakeholders, including those from the fields of planning and building practice, will be involved in the development of the results.
ESG-STADTLABOR as a driver of technology and innovation for the climate-neutral city
The primary objective of the ESG-STADTLABOR is to lay the foundations for ESG-compliant urban development and urban administration, to develop innovative strategies that support sustainable and socially urban development, while increasing efficiency and trustworthiness in administration.
EWV4EnergyTransition - Concrete Contributions to the Urban Energy Transition Using the Example of Properties Owned by the Evangelischer Waisenversorgungsverein Wien
The project addresses key challenges in expanding renewable energy and establishing renewable energy communities within densely built urban areas. The aim is to clearly identify these challenges first and subsequently develop effective solutions through an inclusive and gender-sensitive communication strategy.
Earthen building 2.0: Earthen building of the future - The art of craftsmanship based on engineering approaches
The exploratory project investigates the suitability of fiber optic sensors for the long-term monitoring of the deformation behavior of rammed earth wall elements under moisture and temperature fluctuations (shrinkage) as well as loads (creep). The experimental findings will be integrated into a finite element model to simulate failure behavior under load.
EnerPHit-for-2040 - EnerPHit for a climate-resilient St. Johann
St. Johann wants to set an example for other municipalities by developing a climate roadmap with feasible and financially viable measures.
Exploration project “Glangaerten” – development of a climate neutral neighbourhood in Salzburg Maxglan
In the course of the exploratory talks, the concepts for the development of the climate-neutral district will be developed. Basics are being developed for the topics: citizen participation – mixed use – energy – mobility and open space with the aim of realising a sustainable Plus Energy Quarter that brings added value to the district.
