Cooling LEC - Energy-flexible buildings by controlling cooling systems via unidirectional communication in local energy communities

As a result of climate change and the rise in temperature, especially due to the increase in active cooling systems, especially at low-voltage level, new challenges are being posed to the electricity system (in particular to the distribution network). Due to the high electrical input of active cooling units and the high density of plants, which are sometimes operated uncoordinated and at unfavorable times, leads to peak consumption in the system. The project Cooling LEC therefore has as its overall objective the development and demonstration of a central control / intelligence of decentralized active cooling systems by further developing the unidirectional communication of ripple control systems to create energy-flexible buildings in the sense of the new approach of "Local Energy Communities" by creating a "special tariff". Ripple control systems have been established for many decades and are available and proven by all energy suppliers. The upscaling potential is very big.

Digitization in the construction and real estate industry

In the multitude of digital possibilities, it is very difficult to maintain an overview, to assess trends and potentials, and to recognize correlations. This report therefore aims to describe the current state of the art and the market assessment of promising digital technologies. Information is provided on concrete use cases, added value and challenges of the respective technologies. The analyses presented serve to assess the potential and set the strategic course for the integration of the currently most important digital technologies in the construction and real estate industry.

Energy-Sponge: The Building as an Energy-Sponge - Electricity In - Heat Out

Innovative, dynamic control concepts had been developed which enable (air) heat pumps in combination with PV- or renewable grid electricity to use the building mass of a multi-familiy house as heat storage. User acceptance had been evaluated and possible business models had been developed.

ExTra - ExergyTrafos for heating and air conditioning through district heating

As a contribution to the reduction of CO2 emissions, the project aims at upgrading existing heating networks by adding new devices, so-called exergy trafos, to the heat-exchanging transfer stations. These are driven by district heat and provide heating and cooling, as well as a reduced return temperature, as a service.

FEELings - User Feedback for Energy Efficiency in Buildings

User behavior is a key factor for the energy consumption and the actual energetic performance of a building. A new type of user feedback system will be investigated in this research project. Users provide feedback on the sensed room quality. The data obtained by the feedback system are used to optimize settings of building services in order to improve the energy efficiency and the comfort in the building. A basic proof of concept of this system will be undertaken by means of two use cases.

FIVA - Window prototypes with integrated vacuum glazing

This project targets the further development of windows with integrated vacuum glazing. Such glass products regularly feature a very low Ug-value, and their dimension is in comparison to insulation glass thin and light. As such, these products offer a new alternative for highly-insulating window constructions, and thus also for energy-efficiency measures in buildings. The project is based on the findings of a previous exploratory project (MOTIVE) and focuses on the construction of functional prototypes of vacuum glass windows together with business partners.

Favorite Facades Reuse

The exploratory project "Favorite Facade ReUse" has set itself the goal of renovating and thermally upgrading buildings with curtain facades with a maximum proportion of reuse and the greatest possible protection of the residents. The authenticity of the building is preserved, and CO2 emissions are minimized.

FiTNeS - Facade integrated modular Split-heat pump for new buildings and refurbishment

The goal of FitNeS was the development of modular split heat pumps with compact and silent façade-integrated outdoor units for heating and domestic hot water preparation (and optionally cooling in combination with PV). The outstanding features of the concept are a modular design with a high degree of prefabrication and representing a visually and architectonically attractive, economic and sustainable solution for both new constructions and renovations. One of the main development goals is the minimization of sound emissions by means of optimized flow control.

GREEN Stone: development of a cement-free concrete with recycled content for applications in landscaping

The Green Stone project aims to develop geopolymer concrete with recycled materials in order to reduce the consumption of non-renewable resources and replace the cement content with alternative binders. The landscaping industry in particular requires lightweight, durable and weather-resistant materials. The challenge lies in large-scale implementation, standardization and market acceptance. Research, production and economic efficiency play a central role in this. Laboratory and field trials, prototype tests and economic and ecological analyses are carried out in seven stages. The goal is a sustainable, high-performance concrete with a low carbon footprint and high market potential.

GameOpSys - Gamification for optimizing the energy consumption of buildings and higher-level systems

The central goal is the development of a mobile application that enables the energy optimization and planning of buildings, neighborhoods and higher-level energy systems through the participation of the user and the user as a new source of data and information. The development of the application is strongly transdisciplinary and integrates mathematical methods of simulation and optimization as well as psychological aspects of user behavior in order to develop new business models and open up new markets.

GreenGEO - Data-based integration of climate change adaptation measures into spatial planning

Green and blue infrastructure (GBI) is a key instrument in the fight against climate change. Nevertheless, deciding where and in what form it should be used most effectively remains a challenge in spatial planning practice. The development of a digital model that links location-specific climate risk data with suitable GBI measure proposals will make this much easier and more objective.

HPZ-Walls - High-performance exterior brick walls without additional thermal insulation

Sustainable multi-storey housing made of bricks can only be realised if the strength of thermally optimised vertical coring bricks is tripled. This is to be achieved by changing the hole pattern, namely by reducing the air gap from 8 to 4 mm. A success of the project will form the basis for the realisation of insulation-free, 8-storey residential and office buildings in brick construction.
