Green BIM 3 - Tools for Standardised Data Integration of BIM and Digital Twins, Including Ecosystem Services

The project aims to enhance the availability and integration of BIM data, ecological parameters, and other relevant information into the workflows of the green sector. To achieve this, a web-based application with suitable interfaces will be developed. The foundation for this is a detailed requirement specification, which will be established through interviews, workshops, and research, linking the individual components of the application.

Short Description

Starting point / motivation

The green sector has experienced an economic, social and political upturn in recent years as a result of increasing globalisation and the associated developments in the climate and energy sectors. Digitalisation also offers the industry new opportunities.

In particular through Building Information Modelling (BIM) and the resulting improved interoperability and increased efficiency. In the green sector, however, there are problems with the data availability of BIM objects, ecological parameters and general interoperability.

For example, there are no dynamic tree BIM models in current planning, one of the most important elements for climate adaptation in cities. In sectors such as the timber industry or building construction and civil engineering, this gap has already been addressed and closed by databases (dataHolz, BauDataWeb, BIM object, etc.). Due to the predominantly small and medium-sized structure of the industry, the time and financial resources for such a solution are limited.

Content and goals

This is where the Green BIM 3 project comes in to drive forward practice-orientated technology development. The results of the previous research projects "Green BIM" (duration 09/2019 to 11/2022)" and "Green BIM 2" (duration 06/2023 to 12/2025) mean that the necessary data structures are already available in the form of IFC model proposals, use cases and interface descriptions, among other things.

These are currently only available via access-restricted data structure tools for a limited selection of software and require additional manual adjustments. The aim is therefore to solve data availability and the integration of BIM into work processes by means of a web-based application with corresponding interfaces.

Methods

The basic framework for the application is defined and linked to the individual building blocks of the application through a comprehensive requirements specification based on interviews, workshops and research. On the one hand, this includes the development of dynamic BIM models based on the most relevant climate-fit trees that depict individual growth processes.

In addition, the ecological parameters required for certifications are linked and parameters for the green industry are provided. Currently, the integration of data such as CO2 consumption, ecosystem services etc. is only possible through time-consuming research and subsequent manual input.

In addition to the data, the P-sets developed and tested in practice are also integrated. This data is also relevant for the client and is prepared accordingly. To facilitate online processing, a BIM viewer is also integrated, which allows users to upload their own BIM projects and to customise and link data.

The technical implementation will be accompanied by dialogue forums, training courses and knowledge transfer to the (specialist) public in order to ensure the best possible transfer into practice.

Expected results

The development of the Green BIM web application thus creates the necessary link between research and everyday work. This provides the industry with the necessary expertise and the availability of digital tools to meet the current opportunities and challenges.
