It focuses on reproducibility, transparency, and the objective comparison of modern AI approaches with simple, robust baseline models. The goal is to establish an evidence-based foundation for the responsible use of artificial intelligence in energy- and safety-critical applications in the built environment.
Re-Use: Holzhaus (Re-Use – Timberhouse) - Scenarios of conduction for Repair, Refurbish & Repurpose of prefabricated timber houses
The Re-Use: Holzhaus project deals with the recyclability of prefabricated wooden components, which are generally used for single-family homes and small apartment buildings and have both a long tradition and a diverse manufacturing structure in Austria. The project aims to take significant steps along the entire value chain to make components from the past more attractive as secondary raw materials and to prepare future prefabricated houses for this purpose in the best possible way.
ReCapture - Rapid Capture and Precise Analysis of the Building Envelope as a Basis for Circular Economy in the Existing Building Stock
The goal of the study is to evaluate a novel sensor- and AI-based technology for automated detection, semantic segmentation, and 3D modeling of building envelopes.
ReNew Lindenplatz - Resolving key transformation conflicts for a climate-resilient redevelopment of the Lindenplatz district in Kapfenberg
The exploratory project ReNew Lindenplatz develops a transferable planning approach for climate-neutral and climate-resilient small and medium-sized cities, using the historic old-town district around Lindenplatz and Hauptplatz in Kapfenberg as a case study. Through interdisciplinary analyses, participatory processes and scenario-based development of alternatives, an integrated transformation concept for the district will be developed. The results will form the basis for a subsequent demonstration project and provide transferable solution approaches for other small Austrian pioneer cities.
ReSpace – Reclaiming Spaces
ReSpace is developing an AI-based model for identifying, categorizing, and activating sealed areas. Existing data sources (aerial and satellite images, mobile network data, land registry entries) are integrated and enhanced with dynamic analysis to derive evidence-based recommendations for action.
SUDICA - Sustainable Digitalization as a Challenge for City Administrations
The project investigates the tension between digitization and sustainability in city administrations, particularly focusing on the largely unaddressed, negative global feedback effects of digital technologies. It aims to systematize these interactions, develop an integrative understanding, and lay the groundwork for a more sustainable use of digitization in municipal decisions.
SlagShot
Investigation and analysis of the possible admixture of EAF slags as cement replacement in shotcrete applications for filling spandrels. In collaboration with circular economy expert Thomas Romm ZT, promising results are being tested for application at WienerLinien construction sites.
Stadtwandel - sustainable transformation and climate change adaptation of town and city centers
Stadtwandel aims to initiate sustainable transformation in small cities and municipalities.
StatiPLANT - Exploration of a standardized model for the static assessment of climbing plants
The StatiPLANT project aims to systematically record and analyze static loads on vertically greened facades caused by climbing plants under the influence of wind, tensile forces, and dead loads of the plants. The goal is to develop a conceptual, parameterizable assessment model as the basis for a standardized design procedure in structural engineering.
Storage Cascade MZ: Storage cascade system to establish urban PLUS energy systems on the example of the city of Mürzzuschlag
In the "Storage Cascade MZ" project, battery storage systems are implemented on different grid levels in the city of Mürzzuschlag, whose measurement data enable an integrated grid monitoring and create the basis for a future expansion of the nominal power of photovoltaic (pv) systems.
SuperQ3 – Neighborhood demonstration of a superblock in the Dreiheiligen district, Innsbruck
SuperQ3 is the first scientifically supported demonstration of the superblock concept in Innsbruck as a model for climate-neutral neighborhood development. The project combines traffic calming, improved environmental and residential quality, and participatory transformation in the district of Dreiheiligen. It will deliver transferable urban modules, practical guidelines, and evidence-based findings for further neighborhoods.
SüdSan - Socially acceptable, climate-compatible refurbishment of two multi-family-houses as a model for the refurbishment of the Südtiroler-Siedlung Bludenz
Planning, energetic-economic optimisation, construction and monitoring of the costs, comfort and energetic performance of two socially acceptable and climate-target-compatible refurbished smaller apartment buildings in the Südtiroler-Siedlung Bludenz.
TEA-PUMP – Techno-economic Analysis of Thermoelectric Modules for Efficiency and Performance Enhancement in Heat Pumps for Residential Buildings
The TEA-Pump project explores the innovative use of thermoelectric elements (TEM) in compression heat pumps to enhance their efficiency and performance. Through a comprehensive techno-economic analysis, promising heat pump (HP) configurations for use in urban multi-family housing are identified. The project makes a significant contribution to the decarbonization of heating and cooling supply and supports the development of climate-neutral cities through energy-efficient, future-oriented heat pump technologies.
Town Hall District 2040
A preparatory step for a demonstration project that develops a well-founded and integrated planning basis. It aims to interconnect the energy system, buildings, open spaces, and social structures in order to create a climate-resilient and multifunctional urban quarter.
Transform:Leoben2040 - Preparation of a demonstration project for the climate-neutral development of the Fichtlplatz–Kärntnerstraße district
The exploratory project Transform:LEoben2040 develops a transferable transformation concept for the municipal residential district Fichtlplatz–Kärntnerstraße in Leoben. By developing an integrated district energy system as well as new financing and operational models, the project aims to identify climate-neutral and economically viable solutions for transforming existing urban neighborhoods. The results will provide the basis for a subsequent demonstration phase and serve as a transferable model for other pioneer small cities.
U-Bahn goes circular - Increasing the Circular Economy in the Civil Engineering Works of Vienna’s Subway Lines
The objective is to develop and pilot strategies for the reuse and material recovery of excavated materials in order to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions, landfill volumes, and the use of primary raw materials.
