ReSpace – Reclaiming Spaces
Short Description
Starting point/Motivation
The increasing land sealing in cities hampers sustainable urban development and climate adaptation. Comprehensive datasets for identifying unused sealed areas are lacking, making targeted measures difficult.
Challenges
- Integration and harmonization of heterogeneous data sources
- Development of efficient AI models for automated land categorization
- Ensuring scalability and replicability of the methodology
Content and Goals
ReSpace is developing an AI-based model for identifying and activating sealed areas. It integrates various data sources such as satellite images, mobile data, and land registry records to provide evidence-based solutions for sustainable urban development, circular economy, and construction logistics.
ReSpace enables:
- Precise identification of unused land
- Development of sustainable usage concepts
- Data-driven decision-making for policymakers and urban planners
Methods
- Data Collection & Analysis: Combining various data sources to create an accurate and up-to-date representation.
- AI-Based Modeling: Automated identification of brownfield sites using machine learning methods.
- Reuse Concepts: Developing utilization scenarios for land activation (e.g., urban greening, circular economy, construction logistics, social infrastructure).
- Pilot Applications: Implementation in Vienna, Linz, and Salzburg to demonstrate transferable usage concepts.
Expected Results
- Identification and activation of unused sealed areas
- Provision of data-driven decision-making tools for urban planning
- Development of sustainable utilization concepts
- Increased efficiency in construction logistics through optimized land availability
- Scalable and transferable AI-based solution
By developing a flexible AI model for land activation, ReSpace makes a significant contribution to reducing land sealing and promoting sustainable urban development.
