Kimoni – Artificial Intelligence for Monitoring the Performance of Green Infrastructure

Kimoni develops an AI-based tool for high-resolution analysis and assessment of Green Infrastructure for climate change adaptation. By combining satellite and geospatial data with machine learning, Kimoni provides a cost-efficient and scalable solution to comply with the EU Taxonomy and optimize climate-friendly investments.

Short Description

Starting point / motivation

Global temperatures are continuously reaching new record highs. The EU aims to respond with the Green Deal and has therefore implemented the Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD). Starting in 2025, 49,000 companies in Europe, including 2,000 in Austria, will be required to provide information on their climate change adaptation status.

Contents and goals

In the field of sustainable nature-based solutions (NBS), there is currently no scalable and cost-efficient tool for evaluating and monitoring the impact of Green Infrastructure (GI) in existing buildings. The KIMONI project is developing an innovative AI-based tool that enables high-resolution risk analysis and impact forecasting for GI.

Methods

By combining satellite and geospatial data with machine learning, KIMONI creates a reliable decision-making framework to optimize investments in GI both economically and ecologically. This will enable, for the first time, an efficient and cost-effective monitoring solution aligned with Environmental Objective 2 of the EU Taxonomy.

Expected results

KIMONI provides scientific, economic, and societal benefits: it generates expertise in evaluating climate adaptation measures, creates new market opportunities in ESG reporting, and supports businesses and municipalities in making effective investments in climate-resilient buildings and cities.
