C-Hub - Circular Knowledge Hub

The Circular Knowledge Hub is as a central knowledge hub, combining existing expertise, translating complex regulatory developments into applicable options for action, and connecting stakeholders along the entire value chain. Through structured dialogue formats, quality-assured knowledge modules, and cross-sector cooperation, it strengthens the implementation of circular principles in practice and policy. The goal is a systemic shift toward a resource-efficient, climate-neutral, and resilient construction industry.

Short Description

Ausgangssituation/Motivation

The climate crisis, resource scarcity and biodiversity loss clearly highlight the need for transformation in the construction sector to reduce resource consumption, CO₂ emissions, waste and land use. A fundamental shift in construction is inevitable—and circularity is a key principle for shaping it sustainably. Yet structural frameworks, clear incentives and systemic knowledge transfer are still lacking. This is where the Circular Knowledge Hub comes in.

Inhalte und Zielsetzungen

The Hub positions itself as a central knowledge platform for circular construction. Its aim is to consolidate existing knowledge, prepare it for practical use, and make it accessible across sector boundaries and target groups.

It translates complex European regulatory developments – such as EPBD, EED, ESPR, CSRD and CSDDD – into actionable options within the context of national implementation. Acting as an interface between policy, administration, business, planning, research and civil society, the Hub becomes a space for professional exchange and qualification.

Its overarching goal is to support the implementation of circular principles and initiate a systemic transformation towards regenerative, lifecycle-oriented construction.

Methodische Vorgehensweise

At the heart of the initiative lies a structured network of relevant actors along the entire value chain. Through dialogue formats, workshops and expert groups, the Hub identifies barriers and opportunities, highlights pioneers, and tests and develops strategies. It promotes exchange, skills development and cross-sectoral cooperation.

The approach is user-oriented, interdisciplinary and iterative: content is tailored to the needs of specific audiences – ranging from policymakers and public authorities to planners, industry, academia, education and civil society. Good practices and knowledge modules are collected, quality-assured and made publicly available.

The project is carried out by an interdisciplinary team with expertise in research, practice, education and policy processes. A sounding board of key institutions ensures quality, connectivity and real-world impact.

Erwartete Ergebnisse

The Hub operates on multiple levels:

  • ecologically through resource conservation and CO₂ reduction,
  • socially through participation, qualification and workforce development, and
  • economically through regional value.

As a central contact point for circular construction, the Circular Knowledge Hub provides orientation, accelerates learning and implementation, and contributes to a regenerative, resilient and climate-neutral construction sector.
