KlimaP Stockerau

The municipality of Stockerau, with a population of around 17,000, is the largest town in the Weinviertel region, located approximately 25 km north-west of Vienna. It is a school town, a transport hub and a centre of attraction for industrial and commercial enterprises. The city has been actively involved in climate change adaptation for over 30 years.

Short Description

Issues such as ash dieback, dealing with deadwood and siltation of the floodplain etc. are directly linked to the 445 ha Natura2000 area of the Stockerauer Au.

The nature reserve serves as a recreational area for locals and tourists, as a cooling element for the town in summer and as a water reservoir and flood defence.

The strategic discussion of climate issues is nothing new for the town, but climate protection in the sense of reducing greenhouse gas emissions is increasingly coming into focus.

Stockerau wants to develop its own vision and implementation strategy for climate neutrality by 2040. This will build on previous municipal, political and spatial planning strategies and further develop its ambitions with regard to realisable fields of action within its own sphere of influence for the future.

So far, some partial aspects of an integrative climate neutrality roadmap have been developed:

  • 2012 'Municipal facility and property management' masterplan
  • 2015 'Stockerau transport concept'
  • 2017 Joining the Climate and Energy Model Region (KEM) and Climate Adaptation Region (KLAR!) and the project management organisation 10vor Wien, to which a total of 11 municipalities belong
  • 2024 (currently ongoing) Local development concept (spatial planning incl. anchored active soil protection)

The result of the 'KlimaP Stockerau' project is to be a climate neutrality roadmap for the town, which will describe concrete objectives and implementation measures to achieve the climate targets at municipal level.

This will create the basis for setting the strategic course at the political and administrative level for the entire city, showing how the municipality of Stockerau will work with all relevant stakeholders to achieve climate neutrality by 2040.

A climate pioneer city like Stockerau with 30 years of commitment and endeavours for climate neutrality shows that sustainable transformation is not only possible, but forward-looking - a role model for generations. Stockerau wants to be a visionary city with a sustainable implementation strategy for climate neutrality.
