2320climate-neutral - Climate-neutral Schwechat 2040

The City of Schwechat has been actively committed to climate protection for over 25 years and has been a member of the Climate Alliance since 1999. In 2023, it once again set strong climate protection signals with the adoption of guidelines for energy and climate protection funding. This commitment continues in 2024, with measures such as the mobility concept and the urban climate analysis.

Short Description

As a dynamic industrial city with extensive green spaces, Schwechat is ideally positioned to actively tackle the challenges of our time. With the Climate Neutrality Roadmap 2040, we are clearly committed to being a pioneering city on the path to sustainability and working together step by step to shape a future worth living for all generations.

The development of a climate neutrality roadmap now provides an opportunity to bring together existing initiatives in a coherent framework and to create a solid foundation for the sustainable transformation of society and the economy.

The aim of the project is to understand climate neutrality as a whole and to implement it in a targeted and structured way. To this end, the city plans to consolidate, expand and organise existing data and strategies, and to initiate implementation measures both within its own administrative remit and beyond.

Current focus areas include (innovative) measures in energy, buildings, spatial planning, climate change adaptation and soil protection – such as the urban climate analysis and resulting actions, unsealing and tree planting, and the revitalisation of the Liesing. In addition, administrative capacity is to be strengthened – particularly in the environmental department – and climate protection, energy and environmental topics are to be better integrated throughout the city administration.

The outcome will be a climate neutrality roadmap containing a clear vision, goals, strategies, concrete measures, and a capacity, structure and implementation plan, along with financing options. The roadmap will cover both thematic sectors (energy, mobility, buildings, climate change adaptation) and structural sectors (urban development and spatial planning, climate-neutral administration, administrative structures, processes and capacities, communication, awareness-raising and participation).
