The city of Lienz, with around 12,000 inhabitants, has been a climate alliance municipality for several years and is part of the e5 program. In addition, Lienz actively participates in the accompanying process of the BMK mission "Climate neutral city" and uses the peer-to-peer exchange with the pioneer cities to create synergies and transferable solutions.

The target of the project "KNP Lienz" is to develop a climate neutrality roadmap for the city of Lienz until 2040, based on an integrated, sectorial approach and a participatory co-creation process with local stakeholders. Based on an energy and CO2 balance for the year 2023 and collected socioeconomic and technological data, the AIT model MAED-City reconstructs the base year 2023 in the model and develops a business-as-usual (BAU) and a climate neutrality scenario (KNS) until 2040.

Based on the Lienz climate neutrality strategy 2040, measures in the fields of action will be defined and consolidated in a catalogue of measures. Furthermore, a KPI-based monitoring concept will be created to support the City of Lienz in tracking its progress towards climate neutrality.

Local administrative capacities in the City of Lienz will be built to achieve the goal of climate neutrality by 2040. In the final step, a transfer concept of the city of Lienz's climate neutrality roadmap to the surrounding communities - members of planning association 36, Lienzer Talboden - will be designed.

The results of this project or the added value for the city of Lienz are the creation of a current energy and CO2 balance by sectors and energy carriers, the construction of a climate neutrality strategy including the implementation measures in the fields of action, the administrative structure and capacity building and the KPI-based monitoring concept.
