KlimaschutzGleisdorf - Climate neutrality roadmap for the pioneering small town of Gleisdorf

The solar city of Gleisdorf has a long tradition of using and promoting renewable energy for over 30 years.

Initiatives by municipal players like AEE INTEC, Feistritzwerke, and the municipality have led to the highest solar density in Central Europe, earning Gleisdorf the title "Solar Capital of Europe." Since then, Gleisdorf has been part of the KEM/KLAR energy region Weiz-Gleisdorf, an e5 municipality, and founder of EnergieZukunft WEIZplus eGen (real laboratory initiative). Changing conditions offer opportunities for transformation and process optimization and in 2022, the adoption of a climate protection plan marked a milestone. Gleisdorf relies on the "vision, strategy, implementation, monitoring" approach and a recurring evaluation and improvement cycle for its climate neutrality roadmap.

To reduce greenhouse gas emissions to net zero by 2040, reduction potentials, pathways, and savings measures are identified and supplemented by aspects of climate change adaptation, circular thinking, and carbon sinks. Administrative departments are sensitized and integrated into the process by the climate protection coordinator, with specific departmental targets. Energy transition pioneers from the administration are identified, and goals and measures are set together in the e5 team. Additionally, opportunities are identified to motivate private individuals and businesses to engage in climate and environmental protection.

The focus is on activities within the sphere of influence of the municipality of Gleisdorf and its associated companies. The existing action plan will be further specified, and a short-term and detailed activity plan, including resources and financing options for different time periods, will be drawn up. Gleisdorf aims to be a pioneer for resilient, climate-neutral, and sustainable urban development through transformative innovations and a sustainable transition to renewable energy. The climate protection plan can be further developed into a climate neutrality guideline and implemented.

Municipalities are occupied with a wealth of tasks, all of which have a common denominator: People should be able to lead a good life and feel comfortable in a community! Climate protection is a factor that does not have an immediate and direct impact on people's well-being. Many goals are medium to long-term, or only contribute to the global account. Nevertheless, the task of climate protection has also become a core task for municipalities of all sizes, which must be taken seriously and resolutely. We are doing this!
