KlimaQuartierNikolai

The project aims to improve sustainable energy supply and energy efficiency for the planned NikolaiQuartier in Villach by utilizing waste heat and local energy sources. An innovative energy concept, which also includes the regional hospital, is being developed. Active involvement of residents and stakeholders is key to securing acceptance of the eco-friendly neighbourhood.

Short Description

Starting point / motivation

In 2023, Villach was named one of ten Climate Pioneer Cities in Austria by the Austrian Ministry for Climate Protection. In the planned NikolaiQuartier in Villach, located between the Villach Brewery and the regional hospital, a new district is set to emerge, for which an integrated urban development plan (ISEK) was recently completed. The development of the district will involve active participation from the local population and stakeholders to optimally address the specific needs and potential of the area.

Contents and goals

The research project aims to secure sustainable energy supply and energy efficiency in the planned NikolaiQuartier in Villach by utilizing waste heat and local renewable energy sources. An innovative energy concept for the entire district, including the hospital, will be developed.

A key focus is the involvement of local stakeholders to promote community engagement. Transparent communication and collaboration are intended to strengthen acceptance among residents, businesses, and other interest groups. Early coordination and close cooperation with the city of Villach sets the basis for successful implementation.

Methods

The co-creative development planned as part of the research project enables the early and targeted involvement of energy suppliers, energy potential providers, and energy consumers.

In the co-creative process, the (interim) results from the individual work packages, elaborating on energy planning and comparison of different options of sustainable energy supply, will be presented in workshops with stakeholders and discussed from different perspectives. We plan to hold a series of workshops on-site in Villach to address the various topics according to the progress of the project.

Expected results

Development of an innovative, sustainable energy concept for the entire neighbourhood NikolaiQuartier, including neighbouring properties such as the regional hospital, which is widely accepted by the stakeholders involved.
