FW-Netz Traiskirchen - Feasibility study on decarbonizing the district heating network in Traiskirchen by using the sewage treatment plant as a heat source

The exploratory project is examining the technical, economic, and ecological feasibility of community-wide decarbonization of the district heating network in Traiskirchen. The focus is on merging the existing sub-networks and utilizing wastewater heat from the sewage treatment plant using a large heat pump. The results will form a basis for strategic decision-making and serve as a model for other small and medium-sized towns.

Short Description

Starting point / motivation

In many Austrian cities and municipalities, district heating is still heavily dependent on fossil fuels. Small, decentralized gas boiler systems are often used, while holistic decarbonization solutions are lacking. The use of wastewater heat is also well known in principle, but has only been implemented in isolated cases so far.

The municipality of Traiskirchen operates four natural gas-based local heating networks. The Smart Town Traiskirchen project has already shown that the wastewater treatment plant is fundamentally suitable for waste heat utilization due to its location.

Contents and goals

The FW-Netz Traiskirchen project aims to investigate the feasibility of gradually decarbonizing the district heating network. It is examining whether and how the four existing sub-networks can be connected and expanded. One focus is on the possible use of wastewater heat from the sewage treatment plant by means of a large heat pump. In addition, the project is investigating whether other renewable energy sources can be integrated in a meaningful way.

Methods

The necessary data is collected and processed as part of the exploratory phase. Based on this, several technical and economic variants are developed and compared with each other. The evaluations are carried out from a technical, ecological, and economic perspective.

Expected results

The project provides a comprehensible basis for decision-making for the municipality of Traiskirchen. The results are summarized in a suitable form for municipal decision-makers. They serve as preparation for a possible subsequent R&D project and support an objective assessment of the next steps.
